What is Naturopathy and how does it work?
A naturopath is a healthcare practitioner who uses natural healing practices such as nutrition, herbal medicine, flower remedies, tissue salts, water therapy, Stress management practices, massage and fasting (if appropriate) to help a client to recover from illness.
How does Naturopathy work?
The principle behind Naturopathy is to apply natural support (herbal medicine, nutritional changes, flower remedies etc.) to stimulate both the mind and the body to facilitate the healing process.
The fundamental principle is that nature has an innate ability to heal. This is not a new fad, this concept is thousands of years old, being an underlying principle in traditional medicine systems across the world from Chinese and Ayurvedic approaches to the traditions of Europe and the Americas.
Dr Andreas Michalsen says in his book A Doctor’s Guide to the Science of Natural Medicine – The Natural Prescription – “The healing power of nature is amazing….. up to 80% of chronic diseases can be treated by naturopathy and lifestyle methods.”
A complementary approach
The great thing about Naturopathy is that it can be a complementary approach to modern treatment methods.
Over the years there have been a variety of scientific studies looking at naturopathic treatments that have validated its use to help patients’ recovery back to health.
A professional approach
Most qualified naturopaths will join a professional association such as the Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (ANP). The ANP will ensure that members have gained the appropriate qualifications, comply with their code of practice and undertake regular professional development. The aim is to ensure clients receive appropriate and professional care.
